Page view increase breaks bookmark view

Post by kennethmgreen »

If I have a document that is being viewed at "Fit Visible" which happens to be 135.11%, and I change the zoom level to 125%, all my bookmarks are now off-center. I'm pretty sure there is a way to fix this, but cannot remember, or haven't done it before.

I think what I need to do is something like: change default zoom for document to 125%, then have bookmarks inherit zoom. Is that correct? If so, where are those settings?

Thanks.

(Edit): May be related... Is there a way to center a page view? That is, if viewing at 125% doesn't take up full viewing area (e.g. Fit Visible is > 125%), is there a way to center the page to have even margins on both sides?

Hello, kennethmgreen

Fit Visible only "sets" the position at the time of clicking the button, after that, any scrolling and zooming you do is disconnected from that and cannot really be controlled/restricted or centered automatically.

In regards to following bookmarks specifically, assuming that all pages in your documents are the same size, you can prevent bookmarks from "shifting" the page view to either side, by enabling these options, from the preferences menu:

Thank you for the quick and clear explanation. Unfortunately, even with "Preserve page offset..." checked, bookmarks still shift.

How do I "lock in" the vertical view (assuming that is "page offset")?

(edit) - reread your answer. Looks like the issue is that once I change zoom level, all bets are off. This seems a bit counterintuitive if the "Prevent offset" and "Prevent zoom change" options are both checked. Is that a bug? If the option says do not allow a behavior and that behavior happens, something is wrong. It's almost like the two prevent options need to be more powerful and persist. Once I change a zoom level, my expected behavior is that zoom level - regardless what that level is - would persist until changed. Otherwise, I have to re-zoom every time I click a bookmark.

no, sorry, I may have poorly explained that...

If you are personally changing the zoom level/position, than this is expected. Those settings control how non-human interference are impacted by this. things like following links and bookmarks.

For example, most bookmarks have an X/Y value on the page, and a defined zoom level *(this is often set to inherit these days, resulting in no changes). If you click one of those bookmarks without these options set, it is expected that the defined position ends up in the top left corner of the screen, and if one is defined, the zoom level would change to what the bookmark calls for. This is intended to put the relevant bookmarked information dead center in the screen. You can edit the exact position of any bookmark through the properties pane when that bookmark is selected.

If instead those options are enabled, it does not prevent human interference, but it makes it so the bookmark itself cannot change the left/right position of of you view in the document, and it makes it so the zoom level will not change even if the bookmark tries to define it.

In practice this means, with the options enabled, if you click "fit view" and all of your pages are the same physical size, with the same whitespace on the edges, following any bookmark should keep the same position and zoom level, only changing your vertical position in the document to match the page number and top coordinate of the selected bookmark.
If you zoom in our out a little, especially if you do so using ctrl+scrollwheel, the perspective of the document will be ever so slightly offset. After that minor offset, the rest is the same, and following any bookmark should keep the same position and zoom level, only changing your vertical position in the document to match the page number and top coordinate of the selected bookmark, just with the same, minor offset.

If you are seeing otherwise, I would request that you send us a video of the issue, and a sample document, so we can investigate what may be happening.
