Something wrong displaying bold on WinXP

Post by radue »

This is a very strange problem. On this WinXP computer using PDF-XChange Viewer 2.039 released 9/2/08, the bold fonts are not being displayed as bold, yet using Adobe Reader 9, all works just fine. See the title line on the first page of the attached file. Since the bold fonts are not being displayed correctly in your Viewer they are also not being printed correctly. This WinXP is running SP3 with all the latest MS updates.

I then try displaying this file using your viewer on another WinXP and another Win2K computer and the fonts display correctly.

This file was created in Adobe InDesign CS3 and printed using PDF-XChange Pro Print Driver 4.0152. I was using version 3.x and an earlier version of the Viewer before upgrading, thinking that the problem might be resolved with an upgrade. Only after upgrading did I realize that Adobe Reader 9 displayed it correctly and your Viewer displayed it correctly when run on different computers.

Any suggestions? Can you think of ways why Adobe Reader 9 works yet your Viewer doesn't? Please let me know if the attached file did/didn't get uploaded. The file attachment mechanism is somewhat strange.

Ok, this gets even stranger. I went in to set my preferences for PDF-XChange Pro Print Driver and now PDF-XChange Viewer works! In addition to setting up security, I like to force embedding all used fonts and there were a few other changes. Not sure what caused the Viewer to now work. Keep in mind that before I installed the latest versions of these two products that I uninstalled the previous versions and ran CCleaner.

Keep in mind that I made no preference changes to either of your products before running the initial test that failed to display the bold title on the first page. I wanted a vanilla install for initial testing.

Now do you have any ideas as to what is going on? Maybe the Viewer couldn't find the bold font when it wasn't embeded?

This is strange. In your document all fonts are not embeded (this may cuse a problem on other PC, which does not have same font), but they are not rare. For example on my PC all display well. Embedd fonts will ensure that document will look same on any PC, but this will result larger files.
Can you sen us folowing information:
1. Screenshots of Font tab in Document properties both from Viewer and Adobe Reader, with expanded font records.
2. Information about fonts, installed on your system. It can be collected using folowing command line

Code: Select all

PDFXCview.exe /FontList listfilename.txt
where listfilename.txt is name of file with info we will need. Another way - use Help -> Report a problem from menu with setting corresponding checkbox. In last case please attach scrennshots to letter and provide link to this topic in message body.

I have attached just a few pages from our manual that shows another problem with PDF-XChange Viewer 2.0 build 39.2. Notice in the following sections:
2 Getting Started
2.2 Performing assessments & evaluations
that the bullets are NOT displayed in the bulleted paragraphs by your Viewer (displayed as <), but they are displayed correctly by Adobe Reader 9. I still had version 1.0 build 0034 on an older computer and it displays the bullets correctly. All of the fonts are embedded. This doc was created by the latest H&M 5.0.5.620.

I would submit this via your Viewer, but apparently it depends upon having a valid email setup on this computer, which I don't have. I will see about running another experiment and supplying some additional information concerning the original issue in this post.

Victor,
I have uploaded a zip file with a screen shot of what Adobe Reader 9 shows the fonts to be and what your latest Viewer also shows. Notice that I also show the corresponding title at the top of the page that is displayed correctly in Adobe Reader but not in your Viewer. I have also included the /FontList myfonts.txt file that you wanted. For this situation I told PDF-XChange Pro 4.0152 to NOT embed the fonts. When I specify that all fonts are to be embedded then your Viewer shows it correctly.

For some reason when I tried to run these experiments this evening, specifying that the fonts were not to be embedded did not show the above results. So I uninstalled PDF-XChange Pro, ran CCleaner, rebooted, & reinstalled PDF-XChange Pro. I didn't set any preferences and found that the problem now showed up.

The other thing to note is that when I used PDF-XChange Viewer 1.0 build 0034 on another computer to try and display the pdf without the embedded fonts, it displayed correctly. Obviously, you have made some changes in the newer version that no longer works under these conditions. Be sure to take a look at my earlier posting about the missing bullets.
