[Version 11.0.0] Custom “Open Files / Save As” Dialog: Dropdown Menu Appears Under the Wrong Folder

Post by rakunavi »

Hello,

I would like to report an issue with the new custom “Open Files” / “File Save As” dialog introduced in Version 11.0.0.

In the Windows system dialog box, when clicking the small v arrow in the breadcrumb path, the dropdown menu appears directly under the folder to the right of the arrow, showing the sibling folders at that level. This behavior is spatially consistent and intuitive.

  • figure1.png
In the new custom dialog box, however, although the content of the dropdown is correct, the position is not.
The dropdown appears under the folder to the left of the arrow, which makes it look as if the menu is showing the children of the parent folder rather than the siblings of the selected folder.

  • figure2.png
This breaks the spatial consistency of the breadcrumb navigation and makes the UI feel unintuitive, because the menu appears away from the element the user actually interacted with.

To summarize:

  • Expected (system dialog): dropdown appears under the folder to the right of the arrow
  • Actual (custom dialog): dropdown appears under the folder to the left of the arrow
I have attached a comparison video below that clearly shows the difference between the new custom dialog and the Windows system dialog.

This behavior occurs even on devices without any pen or stylus support.

I mention this because it superficially resembles the previously reported issue where menus expand to the left on pen‑enabled devices (the “pen‑device menu direction” issue).
However, this new issue is not related to pen settings: it also occurs on systems where Windows does not even display the “Choose which hand you write with” option under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
So while the two issues may look similar at first glance, they clearly have different causes.

Since the earlier pen‑related issue has been open for some time, I wanted to clarify that this new problem is separate and reproducible on all systems, not only pen‑enabled ones.

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you for your hard work on this great software.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Thanks for the detailed report and clear comparison—it really helps illustrate the issue.

I was able to reproduce the same behavior on my side (Windows 11, non-pen device), and I agree the dropdown positioning feels off compared to the standard Windows dialog. The content is correct, but the alignment under the left folder instead of the interacted arrow breaks the expected breadcrumb interaction model.

From a UI perspective, it looks like the dropdown anchor point might be tied to the breadcrumb container rather than the specific arrow element. That could explain why it consistently renders offset to the left.

Also, good call separating this from the pen-related menu direction issue—this definitely seems independent and more like a layout/anchoring inconsistency in the custom dialog implementation.

As a quick usability note, this misalignment can be especially confusing when navigating deep folder structures, since it visually suggests a different hierarchy than what is actually being shown.

Hopefully the dev team can align this behavior more closely with the native Windows dialog for consistency.

Hello,

thank you both for the report and analasys. I found the same on this end, and have passed it along for review. I cannot promise a change as this is not "technically" a bug, but hopefully they will agree that it does not quite feel correct in its current state.

Daniel, thank you for contacting the developers.
And Sunilkumar, thank you very much for sharing your valuable comments.

I would like to add another situation that may be helpful for the review, as it highlights the difference between the custom dialog and the system dialog most clearly.

When folder names of very different lengths are mixed together, as shown in the images below, the folder name in the dropdown appears far to the left of the position that was actually clicked. In addition, the trailing ellipsis (...) is not shown in the dropdown list, which can also be confusing.

In the system dialog, both of these aspects behave naturally.

    Hello, rakunavi

Thank you, the initial position issue has been confirmed as on its way to a fix. As for truncation, I once again cannot make any promises, but thank you for the input.
