Why does Ctl C not wok in some PDFs?

Post by philipw2 »

I have a PDF I am trying to mark up. In the body of the text I can copy text to serve as the text of the bookmark. But in the headings, which are often the logical title for a book mark, I cannot copy the text. I can highlight and underline, but not copy.

I have encountered secure PDFs where I cannot do anything. But this is my first case of copy-protected headings.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Not a big problem, obviously, but an anomaly.

If you can highlight and underline, then it must be text, so I don't know of any reason why you cannot copy it. Maybe because it is underlined or highlighted? Can you right-click and select text properties?

Post a link to a sample file that has this problem, or zip one and attach it. Tracker Support will need a file before they can do anything.

Can you copy the text in Adobe Reader?

I can copy in Acrobat Reader.

How do I attach files, as this document although not confidential, is not available on the Web?

The upload attachment option is below the message box. Remember to zip the pdf file first.

I can copy the headings in PDF-XChange too, but they're encrypted, just as they are in Adobe Reader 7.

“Contents” copies as codes \u0009\u000D\u000A\u000B\u000C\u000D\u000B\u000C\u000E

Maybe Tracker Support will know what the problem is.

You are ahead of me. Copying in PDF-XChange Viewer just empties my clipboard.

Will check why text of the heading isn't copied when the whole text in the heading is selected (but I think it is because some symbols have an index number 0).

However, this text cannot be copied as readable text because the text is represented in the page content as font glyph indexes, and the font doesn't contain a table for mapping the glyph index to a corresponding character code.
