"Delayed Write Failed" while saving file to network server

Post by ewndvr »

We had this intermittent and annoying problem after editing a PDF file on a W2003 Server from an XP PC. The error occurred when the file was saved but half way through saving the process stopped, the progress bar stopped at a certain percentage, and an error message from Windows saying "Delayed Write Failed. Windows was unable to save all the data for the file... The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection..." We initially suspected that it could be our network or PC hardware. We swapped network cable, switches, pc, but the same problem remained. We turned our attention to the server. We upgraded the server storage controller firmware. Turned off antivirus on both pc and server, use mapped network drive instead of //server/share etc. Still no good. This problem occurred to most users maybe once a week but it never goes away. We are running the PRO version now, but the same problem occurred to the free version as well. There is no other application that hit this problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is very strange because we have no control over Windows API (Viewer use standard file mapping functions and nothing more). I don't think that probles is related to Viewer, and please note that you are receiving message from Windows, not from Viewer. This may be because your PC lost connection to server (hardware or driver failure) during saving file, so you should make some stress-test for your network.

We did a stress test of the network by pinging 60kb packets and it seems OK. We are also suspecting that the same file may be opened by multiple PDFXviewer instances on same or different PCs and whether that would pose a problem when one of these instances saves it's modified copy.

Openin several instances of a file in the Viewer (from the same PC or different - no matter) will result in the file being locked and any attempt to save in the Viewer with the error message "Invalid Acceess Mode", but not the Windows message "Delayed Write Failed....". Again, this message came from the file system layer, which is fully controlled by windows (and some software, such as antivirus app's), but not controlled by the Viewer.

If you want to make more real tests - you better do massive read/write operations from several PCs to the server (for example copy large archives and/or large set of small files), not just a simple ping.

Hope that helps
