Highlight Tool Forces Whole Line to Be Highlighted (Bug?)

Post by kier.a »

Dear Support,

First of all, congratulations on a first-class job. It's so good, I'm trying to get my boss to open his wallet for 10 licenses! :D

Back to the problem :( In the attached document (Dummy.pdf), and on some lines only, it is not possible to highlight individual words or characters, the whole line is highlighted by force. This seems to be the case for cross out and underline tools also.

The PDF is produced by PDFCreator from a file difference report in Beyond Compare. The left hand side is unaffected by this problem. However, Line 7 on the right hand side demonstrates the problem, whereas Line 14 on the right hand side is OK. I have pointed this out using callouts.

I am using 2.0 Build 41.5, Win XP SP3, PDF Creator 0.9.5.

Hope you can help. Many thanks.

Kier.

Not so good pdf creator - it adds alot of redundant hidden spaces, even on empty lines or after the end of text, to end line (or this is perhaps the printing application?).

Anyway the problem is in the text content - text is printed in a different order to that displayed, and in some cases the Viewer has problems with selection on such text (highlight, crossout and underline tools are based on selection tool and have the same behaviour). A Workarround for such cases - select the text, right click on a selection and then form context menu select Common -> (required tool). If you have difficulties with selection - you may use Select tool with the Alt key pressed, this will change highlight tool behaviour.

Many thanks for the reply. I've worked through some of the possible causes that you mention.

The work around you suggest (using the context sensitive menu) doesn't seem to be any advantage since, as you point out, it is the selection of text first which is the problem. The Alt key modifier does seem to be an improvement but only allows whole words to be selected. Our daily work involves C code peer review and we need to be able to mark up individual characters occasionally.

I created the attached file (Dummy2.pdf) using completely different tools to eliminate these as being the cause; ExamDiff Pro 3.2c and PDF995 as comparison and print tools respectively but the problem still remains. Crucially however, Adobe Reader 8.0 doesn't have this problem with the same file.

- Is there a way to select text using the keyboard? e.g. Hold down shift while the moving the cursor with left and right arrow keys.
- Is there a plan to address the problem generally in Viewer in the future?

Thank you very much.
