First tthis is a great program, the moment I tried it, I uninstalled foxit reader immediately " I quit Acrobat reader long time ago.
I need help with opening pdf files; when I click a pdf to open I get the Xchange viewer open, but the file it self doesn't open... I have to drag the pdf into the open software. This also aoccurs when I click a pdf in winrar...this happens specially when I have another pdf file open already, so Inever enjoyed a stratight multi tabbed documents yet.
The other question is how to open PDF files in my browser instead openning in the viewer itself. I use ie8, aand opera broser "also thinking about safari"
I can't remeber if Installed the portable version or the full version, but most probably it is the portable one, as I don't see the viewer in my list of programs.
First thank you for the kind words and welcome to the Tracker family
Yes you most probably have the portable viewer. And as every portable application our Viewer does not write anything in the registry, and windows does not know which application to start to open your PDF files. Making the files open in your browser also requires some registry entries, so the best option here would be to download and install the stand alone version: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/download/PDFXVwer.zip
I have not tested with Safari but Opera, FF and IE8 all work flawlessly with our viewer and display the files in tabs in your browser.
So the bottom line is, please install from the link provided and you will see for yourself what our viewer can do.
First, No need to thank me, these are not complement "so far " I don't understand what is the sense of having a portable vesion if it is not going to be a working one, specially that I had identefied the veiwer to be my default pdf viewere, and it actually opens when i click the pdf , but then the file wouldn't load, and i have to drag it manually to the open viewer so it would open, I know there has to be something missing, and I am no programmewr, but I really don't think it is because of the portable version, I think it is the setting some how, especially that the portabe foxit reader is completely functional "at least for openning pdfs directly or from websites."
It has been long time since I used full versions on my computer, I only use portable versions , and was exited when I saw that your site offer portable version for download.
do you have Foxit portable or Foxit for U3? I didn't found portable version on Foxit webpage.
Portable applications are not able use windows file extension associations as they are stored in Windows registry,
which they must no alter. So portable viewer can't open pdf by doubleclick as he is no allowed write to registry info,
that he should be launched.
Applications for U3 are using special manager which writes info to windows registry when U3 drive is connected and delete
it from registry when U3 drive is removed. Such applications are able to use windows file extension associations.
This is the first time I hear a portable application to be able to make file associations.
Being a portable means that you can write it to any media and carry it around with you. If it does write anything in the registry what will happen the next time when your memory stick is assigned device letter N: instead of M: when you plug it to your computer?
If you want file associations and preview in browser you do need to install the stand alone version of our Viewer.
And as Podhorny said, I could not find a portable version on the Foxit website, only the standalone and U3 versions.
from Wikipedia - Applications which comply with U3 specifications are allowed to write files or registry information to the host computer, but they must remove this information when the flash drive is ejected. Customizations and settings are instead stored with the application on the flash drive.
So both versions of Foxit DO write to the registry to allow the file associations, and our portable version being completely portable does not do this, but also does not require a special memory stick to work.
Thanks for your reply. Regarding the File association, I have the portable version installed on external hard drive attached to my computer which is always assigned the lsame etter, as it never get pulled of my computer " as well as all other ppplications I use"....when I opened PDF file for the first time I clicked the "open program with" from specific location and I pick the exe file for the xviewer, and I check always use this program to poen this type of file., and now I have it associated with pdf files...all pdf files on my computer show the xviewr icon, and again my problem is when I click pdf file the xviewer will open, but the file itself will not open till I drag it manually into the open viewer.
I do this with all the portable programs I use "eg winrar, mplayer, etc" and they al work just fine to epn therir associated files. Sorry, I am not that ocmputer saavy to tell you if they are doing anything to the registry or not
Thanks for explaining the difference between Stand alone and U3 program, I wasn't aware of it, I always thought they are the same.
So you still thin k I need ot install your full version inorder to get its full use???
