embedded font issue?

Post by yerrbjr »

Hi Folks

Attached is a simple text PDF that displays as gobble-gook in PDF viewer (2.0 42.3 pro) but properly in Foxit Reader 3.0.1817.
The PDF was created by Softmaker "Textmaker" 2008.505.
If I instruct TM to embed the fonts (Times New Roman) then all is well in both Foxit and PDFXC viewer.
I have no idea what's up here, but I wonder if someone could have a look.

regards,
Ray

Hi Ray.
Your creator use non-standard font encoding, which in general cannot be handled correctly (especially if computer on which you will try to View PDF has other fonts). To use such encodings and display pdf correctly fonts must be embedded (or better - one of standard encodings used).
We will try to add workarround for such cases, but I cannot promise in which build.

Then, to paraphrase, "Times New Roman" is not "Times-Roman", and that substituting one for the other, while perhaps expedient, is a discretionary accommodation on the part of the viewer-- one that PDF Viewer has thus far not elected.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, "Times New Roman" is not a standard PDF font. Also, if someone doesn't have this font (or has another version of this font, with a different glyphs order) Foxit/Adobe (in fact any correctly compliant PDF Viewer) will not display your files correctly also.

This is a PDF 'creator' problem - not Viewer/Reader issue, and all you can do to fix this, is embed the fonts in the file when creating/modifying.

Other creator's may use other pdf standard encodings for non-embedded fonts (WinAnsi, for example) and therefore have no such problems.
