send mail function

Post by ROllSOUND »

Hi,

I have some problem withe the mail function. I use WinXP and the newest (42.3) version of xchange-viewer-pro.

When I try to send a file via the explorer function "send to mail" a new mail opens in the Thunderbuird Mail Editor. When I try to send an open pdf from the viewer via the "send per mail function" I get a massege like "Can´t send the Document, Error [Netlib]:MAPI not installed"

Why this happend? Any other mail functions from the system work propper!

It's some kind of communication error within Windows. I've seen it before many times.. I suggest that you try tinkering with Windows associations to re-establish MAPI communications that will allow the Xchange Viewer to launch the email program. First, try changing the default email program in Internet Options - Programs, from Thunderbird to Outlook. Then press OK. Then change it back to Thunderbird. Press OK again.

That might work..

If it doesn't, I'd try leaving Outlook as the default and reinstalling Thunderbird over itself. When asked, choose Thunderbird as the default email program. You won't lose any email or anything.

Then see if the Xchange Viewer is working with your email program.

Thanks for your suggestion Cadillakin,

I as well have problems with windows Vista, even though my default mail options are all set to Thunderbird within Vista, windows launches Winmail through the viewer, quite annoying and I have repaired it as you suggested to RollSOUND, by switching to Outlook and reinstalling thunderbird and switchingit back. But within a month Vista has defaulted back to Winmail. Annoying.

I will try and find info on these Windows bugs and get back to you RollSOUND if I find anything pertinent.

Regards,

Chris

Hi Cadillakin, Hi Chris,

it must be something stronger. I have done all and I think I have done it exactly this way. And no change. I think, it must be something with simple and advanced MAPI. Other Programs thy have the send with mail function can send their files with the default selected Mail App (in this case = TB) and thy send with TB when there is it possible to select. Only the Viewer makes the problem.
So, I will deinstall the TB an than I will exactly follow the advice from Cadillakin. After then I will be back and report.

Hi Franz-Josef,

I still think it's a mapi problem, not a problem with the xchange viewer. I don't think the fix is going to come from the xchange side, but rather from the Microsoft side. I say this because in the recent past, I was trying out email notifiers that sit in the tray. A couple of the more preferable ones would not launch the email program with the proper parameters, (Mailto, subject, message) though they were supposedly capable of doing so. It was frustrating. It was my tinkering with the default programs on the Microsoft side that helped me fix those. I think I might have used the "Set Program Access and Default" Tool available in Add Remove Programs. I did something similar to what I recommended above.. in that I first gave the Microsoft programs all the access and set them as defaults, then I switched into custom or non-Microsoft mode and changed things to my preferred applications. I don't have real good recall of what exactly worked for me.. In any event, those efforts seemed to shake MAPI out of it's sleep. Afterwards, the programs worked.

I recommend you give that configuration area a try also.

Unless we can get some idea how to reproduce your issue, it's hard to be of much help. For me, I've never had a problem launching my Thunderbird mail from the Xchange Viewer, so I don't really know what to advise, other than what I have just written.

Hi,

I am afraid from our perspective, Cadillakin is correct - there are numerous problems with MAPI - particuarly 'Simple MAPI' and various mail clients - you need to ensure that your default mail client for MAPI use is set correctly and unfortunatley - even if you appear to have done this successfully in one or more places - Windows can still 'trip up' and not always perform the functionality as it should - its an imperfect technology, that MS have left problematic for too long - do a google search and you will see the response is staggering !

SMTP is far more reliable - but does not support all the features - such as access to your contacts/address list and palcing a copy in your 'sent' folder - but your emails will go out far more relaibley once setup.

Things are unlikely to improve until MS is motivated to do something.

Hi Cadillakin, Hi Chris,

thanks for your statements. But I found out somthing more, because, I remember that this function run on an old installation. The problem starts first after an new system instllation.

1. Step. I install a brand new XP with SP3 and all updates. Also I install the viewer and a TB 2.0.0.22.
- I can´t send a pdf via the viewer function.
2. Step. I install MS OE and make this as a default Mailer. So I have the same problem. (remeber, when I try to send a file via the dropdown menue "send as email" this opens a new mail editor window.

3. Step. I deinstall OE and install Outlook2007. Then anything work fine. Wenn I try to send from the viewer also the TB editor window opens.

After I deinstall the Outlook2007 I have the same problems again. I checked the MAPI32.dll in the win\System32 directory. It is still the same with the timestamp "04.08.2004 14:00".

So wats going on? Why I have to install MS Outlook2007 to make the function between the Viewer and TB possible?

Franz-Josef

Hi ROllSOUND

I just did the following in an attempt to recreate your issue.

1) Create a new installation of XP x86 SP3, all updates.
2) Install PDF-XChange Pro with the exe installer. This installs the same Viewer as the stand alone Viewer installer.
3) Install Thunderbird (2.0.0.23) and set up an account.
4) restart TB to check that I am prompted to choose it as default mail app and schoose yes.
5) With TB running I open a PDF document in PDF-XChange Viewer and select File --> Send bt E-mail, TB launches the compose window with pdf attached.
6) With TB not running TB launches main app and the compose window with pdf attached.

see attached screenshot.

Is there anything different in my set up or proceedure that you can see is different from your such that we might glean a clue as to why you are seeing dfifferent results? This was done in a virtual environment though that should be irrelevant...

Hi Paul,

you right. This is the way I install PDF-XChange Pro with the exe installer an the TB with the installer as well. Two things are differend. First, I install the XP and the rest on a real Notebook HD and I dont create a new account for the TB. I use an older profile selectet with the TB profilemanager. (TB.exe -P). But the rest is the same.

I think Cadillakin and Chris are right with the thinking for mapi. So, I find out, that an other App (pdf factory pro) makes the same problem. Only works korrekt with Outlook installed.

Oh, and there is something more differend. My XP is the German version. Maybe the problem cames from there?

Hi ROllSOUND

other than creating a new TB account/profile and testing it as default mail handler there's not much I can add. I don't think using German Windows should make a difference. If creating a new profile works you could then migrate the old profile to the new. Mozilla admit however that MAPI support is somewhat "buggy"... http://kb.mozillazine.org/MAPI_Support

Hello guys,
Im having the very same problem:
When clicking on button that sends the pdf file via email(next to the print button) I got this: "error [netlib]: MAPI not installed"

Im using Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 (latest), Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit.
MT is set to default email program in Windows.
In any other programs like OpenOffice or Adobe reader this function works correctly.
I have the latest version of PDF-Xchange viewer (2.0 build 42.4)
With the earlier build it was the same.
Even when trying to change default mail program to deafault or any other, I got the same error.
Thank you.

H Dech,

it seems you have set things correctly for TB to be the default mail handler. Can you tell me what is listed for associations when you go to Control Panel --> Default Programs --> Set Your Default Programs --> Mozilla Thunderbird --> Choose Defaults for this Program please. Note that the path displayed in the resulting window is: Control Panel --> Defaults Programs --> Set Default programs --> Set Program Associations. I'm using Vista x64 and PDF-XChnage Viewer launched Thunderbird correctly for both the Send as Email and Report a Problem functions. I have the following set:
Extensions - .eml
Protocols - MAILTO
Start Menu - Email Link

see screenshot. Do you have the same?

thx for quick reply.
...yes - I have it exeactly the same way you have. Everything is checked.
And in addition:
Control Panel --> Default Programs --> Computer default settings and acces to programs (may not be exac translation as I write here due to my different language(czech)) --> "my own" --> choose default email program -I check the Thunderbird.
But when I return to this menu the Thunderbird is allways UNchecked and the "use current email program" is checked instead.

In Adobe reader 9.1 it did almost the same thing. None error was shown but when clicking on "send via email" button, nothing was happening. Than I did what I have described few sentences before (Control Panel --> Def... Computer default...) and this button starts working. But not in pdf xchange viewer :-(

Thanks for the details dech,

I've asked the dev team to take a look at this and see if they can suggest what we should try next. Thanks for your patience in getting to the bottom of this.

Hi again dech,

as I read your post I believe you are saying that now the viewer will correctly launch Thunderbird from a mailto link in a document but still worn't work with File --> Send by email ?

Can I ask what version of the viewer you are running and get you to upgrade to the latest if it's older than build 42.6 Use help --> Avout PDF-XChange Viewer to get your current version/build number and use Help --> Check for Updates to get 42.6.

Please try that and tell me if you are still getting the issue.
