Release GDI objects

Post by RudolfErnst »

Hi,

in our client application we use the ActiveX Browser Plugin in an Eclipse RCP framework. Our clients have a lot of small pdf files which contain only one page. There is an AutoViewing Mode where they open one small Pdf document per second. Doing this for some hundreds of documents makes Windows unusable. You can't even open menus in other programms like Outlook, Firefox, ...

I found out in TaskManager that Windows is running out of GDI objects because PDFXCview.exe is never releasing GDI handles. Per document it allocates 2 GDI object handles and after 1500 documents 3000 handles are occupied.

You can see this behaviour also in Firefox. Repeat dragging Pdf document into firefox one after another and you can watch in TaskManager the increasing number of GDI objects of PDFXCview.exe whereas only one document is displayed in the browser.

Closing the last displayed document before opening the next one doesn't help. Is there another way to release unused GDI handles programmatically.

kind regards
Rudi

Hi Rudi,

I just got confirmation from the development team that the problem is reproduced and they are now investigating it in details.

Best,
Stefan

Hey Rudi,

At this moment we are expecting the build by the weekend/next Monday, but it is still uncertain, so we can't make any precise promises.
It might pretty well get delayed a bit more than Monday.

Cheers,
Stefan

Hi all,

I can say almost certainly - it will not be released then - we will be taking at least until the middle of the week to test and correct any issues found and then we are also thoroughly testing all the various versions of the installers and maybe will release a beta build for a few selected users to test and hopefully agree that we have got this as close to 100% reliability as possible.

A realistic date for release is the following Monday, 28th September.

we are determined to ensure the best possible QA testing is done on this release prior to publication.
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Best regards
