Show pdf in browser (build 42.5)

Post by UPieper »

Hi,

I was hoping that the problem with showing pdfs in the browser would be solved with build 42.5, but it isn't. As you can see from the screenshot I have 2 options:

- use PDF-Xchange viewer(default)
- Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)

Funny thing is that I have disabled the browser integration in Acrobat and enabled it in the XChange viewer. Any advice on how to solve this?

Regards

Max

You can fix it. Essentially, two things need to be done. The Adobe plugin will need to be disabled in FF.. and the mimetypes.rdf will need to be deleted. FF will then create a new mimetypes.rdf on browser restart, without the Adobe plugin and your Xchange Viewer plugin should work.

Hi Cadillakin,

I've deleted the nppdf32.dll from the plugin directory and the mimetypes.rdf from the profile. I'm still getting the same choices as shown in my screenshot in the original post.

EDIT: I've put back the Acrobat plugin into the mozilla plugin directory and disbaled the plugin via the addons-plugin window ----> NOW IT WORKS!
EDIT2: I played around a little more and on my system it wasn't even necessary to delete the mimetypes.rdf, disabling the Plugin did the trick...

Hi UPieper. I'm glad you got it fixed..

I might be wrong, but I think there are some indications in this forum and/or elsewhere, that disabling FF plugins alone will not always work - depending on the plugins - and if they take precedence over the content of the mimetypes.rdf file. Adobe's plugins seem to take precedence. Other pdf applications can conflict with the Xchange Viewer as well. Deleting the mimetypes.rdf file forces a re-creation and a seemingly correct reading of the plugins that are in force. In other words, the mimetypes.rdf can be corrupted with data that is not present or relevant.

Thanks for the details there Cadillakin

UPieper, it seems to me that the issue here is related to the settings already in your FF profile and upgrading alone is not enough to rectify the issue as Cadillakin has pointed out, more was required.

For the record, I would like to point out that the browser plugin functionality was tested in this build (42.5) and found to be functional on both a clean system and one where the profile had no pre-existing issues so I am confident saying that whilst you had to take action to correct this, build 42.5 is not the 'cause' of the issue.

pedantic perhaps but I do feel worth pointing out.
