Why no auto-update function in PDF-XChange Viewer?

Post by Cimba »

I come from Germany, so please excuse my english.

I was wondering, why PDF-XChange Viewer has no self-update function, which looks at program start automatic, if there is an update and if so, displays this with a textbox?

I found the "live update" which needs 3 mouseclicks to look for updates not really comfortable.

Or why can the program "live update" not looks silent (without mouseclicks) for updates and notifies only, if there is an update. So I can put this program in the autostart group.

We did some research on this and received an overwhelmingly adamant % of replies - that users have too many programs 'self' updating already - from Windows to their AV, Flash, Multi Media, programs etc etc and did not want any more !

Believe me - if we did offer it we would receive complaints - if we dont offer it - we will receive complaints - its a 'catch 22' / 'No win' question and for now at least we will not offer this.

We do however appreciate the feedback - so please dont be put off in the future ! :)

Cheers

Thanks for the reply. Interessting, that people don't want this feature.

Maybe you can make an command line parameter for live update like "liveupdate.exe /silent", which only popup with a message box, if there is an update (and don't ask for Proxy etc.) - for people like me. So there where both groups happy ;)

Opera 10 now has three options in Preferences, Security:
  1. Do not check for updates
  2. Notify me about available updates
  3. Automatically install updates
That should please everyone.
I have added a toolbar button to make manual checking for updates easier.
