How to do 'GO TO NEXT' after Search like Ctrl-G?

Post by tpx »

I just bought Pro, and I'm still getting accustomed, and overall this is such a much better product. BUT...

After I have done a search (not a find), I have to manually click on the found list on the right. This was easily and quickly done with Ctrl-G before, and could be done even when the results list was hidden. This more manual method is slow and cumbersome and difficult to do when searching through multiple documents, and I have to keep the results list open, losing much screen real estate.

How can I do this with PDF-XChange Viewer? TIA.

By “before” I presume that you mean in Adobe Reader. It could never be done before in PDF-XChange as far as I know.

It would be useful to have the option.

The search pane can be reduced in width to 100 pixels or less to save screen real-estate. Down cursor, enter will find the next search result. Not quite as convenient as Control G, but it may help while we're wating for a fix.

Yes, sorry, I assumed everybody came from Adobe. Thanks for the navigation tip, it works but is clumsy and I can see it's going to be a challenge with different keyboards.

Is there a fix coming that you know of? If not, what is the way that I would request it? I'm kind of surprised that this is a feature Adobe has, but is not in Xchange. Maybe I jumped too soon at the Pro license, from everything I read, Xchange was the holy grail. Thanks again.

There are several features that Adobe Reader has, but not PDF-XChange — but not many that are important IMO. Portfolio documents, slideshows, read out loud, for example.

There are lots of feature in PDF-XChange that are not available in Adobe Reader. Customisation is especially versatile.

You already made the feature request by posting here. Its the first time I have seen this shortcut asked for. It might already exist, but I don't think it does. Tracker tend to fix things quickly if they are not difficult to do — often in the next build, which might be anything from a week to a couple of months.

If you regularly search multiple documents you might be interest in the test results in this thread.

Hello tpx,
and thanks for the help Bhikkhu,

Unfortunately, I can only think of the F3 for the "find" field in the toolbars.

The list of results in the search pane could either be clicked or browsed through with the arrow keys + enter, and yes it shouldn't be closed.
Will check now with development if this can be added and we will let you know here in this topic.

Regards,
Stefan

Bhikkhu, Thanks. Yes, I saw that thread and I was already aware of the search speed, but that is somewhat offset by the 'Go To' inefficiency. This came in very handy recently when I had to search for a hidden charge by my cell phone carrier, with Adobe I was able to quickly locate all the charges in my last year's pdf invoices. Last night I compared the functionality side-by-side, and it appears to be the ONLY superiority I have found so far of Adobe.

Stefan, I appreciate you following up with this request. Since Search and Find (F3) are independent functions, and the Find is in a separate field and only works in the current document, this doesn't help at all. I tried it last night and became very frustrated with it. Thanks for the tip anyways, and I hope Ctrl+G comes soon, it doesn't look like that key combination is currently in use.

PS: Can't wait to try out the Pro features!

Hello again tpx,

Just got some news from the Viewer project leader. If it is not too hard to be implemented you might find this feature available by the end of the day (there would be a new build released later), and if it appears to be a bit tougher to implement it will be delayed, maybe even postponed until ver3 - depending on the work needed to do this.

As for the pro features, they are all available for evaluation in the free viewer, if you have not hidden them. But be careful with testing (blease use copies or new files and make packup of important ones) as if you save a file on which you applied a pro feature it will get saved with "DEMO" stamps that become permanent part of it and can not be removed later.

Cheers,
Stefan

Thanks for the action, I will keep my fingers crossed and hope it will be the easy route on the Ctrl+G. As for Pro, I already entered my license key, so I shouldn't have any problems, right? Also, as I update the product in the future, the key will always be there permanently?

Yes you should have no problems from now on, yes the key will be valid for all version 2 builds of the viewer (and also entitles you for a free upgrade to ver3 if it is released in the next 12 months), so you can easily forget the serial is there now - unless you reinstall windows you should not need to enter your serial again.

As for the shortcuts they are implemented and would be available with tonight's build and would be F4 and Shift + F4 but are customizable as most of the other key combination in our Viewer so you could set them to Ctrl+G and Ctrl+Shift+G to match those in Adobe.

Great, it works, Thanks! I still have one important issue, when I close the 'Search PDF' results pane, it reappears every time I hit F4. When this happens, it changes the document zoom under 'Fit Width' from 175% to 139% in order to make room for the results. I compared this to Acrobat, and the results pane stays hidden and the document shows 174% the whole time as I view all the results.

Also, I noticed that Viewer sets individual 'Fit' values on each document, so that when F4 shows me the results for the following document, zoom goes to 100% for 'Actual Size'. In my case, three consecutive F4's change zoom from 175% to 139% to 100%, very disconcerting and I have to keep changing 'Fit' settings; under Acrobat, it stays at the same 174% throughout, no fiddling.

Can you help out with this? Thanks again for the quick turnaround on F4!

Hello tpx,

This is by design and in our Viewer it is not possible to jump through the results when the results pane is hidden.
Will ask the development team if some option could be added to not display the search pane if it is hidden and the F4 still to work, but for the moment you could reduce it's width to just a few pixels and it will still work

Best,
Stefan

Understood, but I don't think it's necessary for it to work this way. Case in point, if you hide the pane and hit F4, it DOES jump to the next result, at least once. The reason that reducing the size of the pane isn't feasible is that most of the time it is important to be able to actually read the results at the beginning of the search. That would require resizing the pane twice during every search.

Again, compare the experience when using Acrobat - I'm not saying it should be done because Acrobat does it, I'm saying because it's a better way. Plus, at least one person agreed at the beginning of the thread that it's important to maximize real estate. Thanks again.

In this case you may make the 'Search PDF' panel floating.
For this please press left mouse button on the panel's caption and move out of main window.

That's an interesting effect, but not very useful because the floating panel is 'always on top' and covers up the document, and I end up closing it so that I can read the document. Is there a way to make it so that it is not 'always on top'? Hiding it is still a better option, IMO. Thanks for the tip.

Well Vasyl just gave a suggestion here.

I personally am always having at least the pages/bookmarks pane opened, so you could move the search pane over it and still have most of the document visible (unfortunately the search pane can't be docked under/above the bookmarks pane as the attachments one for example.

Yes. Use this free utility: Win Roll. It is tiny, and can be loaded on Windows startup. Right-click on any Window application's title bar to roll up the window. Make the search panel floating, and roll it up.

Another route would be with Power Menu which lets you set any window as Transparent.
