Hi,
I have merged some pdf-files to one file with XChange Viewer Pro (insert pages..) and tried to view it with PocketXpdf, but it seems that the version of the merged pdf-file has changed, resulting in PocketXpdf can't open it (it's possible to open the single pdf-files).
Why does the merge change the version of the pdf?

Hi,
some of the functionality in one file - may not be compatible with the versioning of another file you are trying to merge - so PDF-XChange will convert the version format type to a suitable one to support the required functionality.
If you would care to post before and after example files - we would be happy to comment further.
thanks.

Thank you for your fast response,
I can open both files in PocketXpdf before the merger.
Here are example files: File1, File2 (before) and the merged file File1_2 (after)

Re: Open merged pdf with PocketXpdf
Hi,
I can see no obvious reasons for the problem and the Version has not changed - still PDF format 1.5 and the file opens in both ours and Adobe's products just fine- could it be an issue with the PocketXPDF reader - rather than our problem?
Also - just a thought - you are using Version 42.7 of PDF-XChange Viewer to merge the files - please download and update to the latest - just in case this helps.
I would also ask the authors of PocketXPDF to take a look and advise if they can see any problems from their perspective with the file and their Reader.

Re: Open merged pdf with PocketXpdf
Hi,
I have updated to the new version, no change
Something is changed in the pdf, otherwise it would open.
I also tried PDFsam to merge the pdf files, there the outcoming file works fine in PocketXpdf
I will try to contact the devs of pocketXpdf and tell you when I get information.

Many thanks and we will also analyse further.
Edited and added ..
Just thinking a little more on this, I suspect your PocketXPDF may require a 'tagged' PDF and we are adding support in Version 3 for this - due out in the spring - will ask a colleague to advise further.

Re: Open merged pdf with PocketXpdf
Please change the option "PDF Specification" to "1.4" value. You can find this option on "New Documents" page of viewer preferences (Edit->Preferences).
Maybe you will need to create new empty document and insert pages from both your files into this document.
Just to add a little detail - the PDF-XChange viewer takes advantage of the advanced features of the PDF format version to maximise the optimisation of the file, whilst the files prior to merging are 1.5 format - they are not taking advantage of this - so you can view ok using the PocketXPDF.
Once merged and optimised in the PDF-XChange Viewer taking full advantage of these features - your PocketXPDF it would appear cannot cope with the extended use of object streams (this requires lot of CPU and memory, not an issue for a PC - but for PDA's etc - this could be a problem.)
Reverting to the 1.4 format should resolve this and most likely comparitively at least with the original files - optimisation should not be too much of an issue.

Re: Open merged pdf with PocketXpdf
Thank you, this solved my problem. (it works only when creating a new, empty document)
