The Only 2 Features I Really Miss from Acrobat

Post by irv »

1. Clearscan OCR; not as much to make the scanned text searchable; I like it more because it makes scanned text look better on screen and in print. OCR has been mentioned elsewhere on the forum, but I'd be most interested in a Clearscan-type implementation.

2. Subpixel font smoothing, as requested in this thread. It sounds like it's being considered, but Cleartype has been eliminated as a possible method. Why is that?

1. OCR is coming, but I'm affraid that it will ba added in V3 of Viewer (maybe not in the first builds, but not too far).
2. Actually ClearType is not compatible with current rendering model because add unwanted colorising and require up to 1.5-2 times more calculations (as result - much slower text rendering). And I think you are interested not in SubPixel rendering, but in font hinting, which is completely different mechanism, used to make text more redable on screen (less fussy).

Yes, I'll admit I don't really know about font hinting vs. subpixel rendering. Thank you for being receptive to my feedback.

Re: the font smoothing, might XChange get Direct2D or DirectWrite support?
