MSI Installation error "A later version..."

Post by Meitzi »

We have PDF-XChange Viewer installed all of our corporate computers. Now we have 2.0 build 42.2 version installed. (both x86 and x64 versions. Windows XP, Vista, 7)

Now I'm unable to install new version (42.10). I did uninstall previous version (it does not matter if you unistall or not), but now installer gives error "A later version of PDF-XChange Viewer is already installed".

I have 2 workaround to manually install software.
Use EXE installer, however I want use MSI.
Delete key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\707BA220485E61E41B8B4B0C54345604"

But these does not solve my problem entirely.

Code: Select all

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\707BA220485E61E41B8B4B0C54345604]
"ProductName"="PDF-XChange Viewer"
"PackageCode"="1A901495DFC91B64A9FF8A4D0469AC97"

"Version"=dword:0200002a
"Assignment"=dword:00000001

"InstanceType"=dword:00000000
"AuthorizedLUAApp"=dword:00000000
"Clients"=hex(7):3a,00,00,00,00,00

It is known problem of MSI installers when only least significant number in the version is changed (minor update).
One of recommendations for such cases is to use the following command line for installation:

msiexec /fvomus <full_path_to_msi_file.msi> REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus MSIENFORCEUPGRADECOMPONENTRULES=1
PDF-XChange Co Ltd. (Project Director)

When attaching files to any message - please ensure they are archived and posted as a .ZIP, .RAR or .7z format - or they will not be posted - thanks.

When you use Active Directory Group Policy to deploy software, you cannot define command line options. (idea of MSI is install software without scripts /command lines)

So, I dont know why you create MSI if it does not work.

It does work - but there are bugs in the MSI logic for some very specific items - and rather than complain to us about its issues and short comings - we would encourage and welcome you to ask Microsoft why they leave such issues unfixed for months and sometimes even years !
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

I'm not so convinced it's MSI bug. Maybe you did not follow Microsoft rules about minor update.

Hi Meitzi

I am about 99.99% sure we did and we have found numerous forum and group posts about just such issues - but any light you can throw on the subject which correct any misunderstandings on our part would be warmly welcomed ..

Cheers
