How to freeze Zoom Level?

Post by ZeroPaper »

Hi,

Using PDF-XChange 2.0.45 on Windows 7 x64.

The PDF document is opened with a microscopic font. I increased thezoom level to 150%. As soon as I click anywhere in the bookmark, the zoom go back to the small font display. Is there a way to set PDF-XChange to always remember the Zoom Level?

Thanks in advance for any help.

EDIT: this seems to be document dependant. On some PDF, the Zoom Level remains unchanged when I navigate through bookmarks. On other PDFs, the zoom is systematically reset. What is the reason?

Hi ZeroPaper,

The problem is indeed with the document.
Bookmarks can contain information not only about on which page and where on that page to redirect you but also about the zoom level to be used when you click that bookmark.

There is no workaround for this as this is the document creator's wish the bookmarks to behave like this and we have to obey that.

You have already noticed that other documents do not command your zoom level.

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

That is the answer I am afraid to hear. In my opinion, a user set a Zoom Level for a reason. Whether good or bad but this user WANTS this Zoom Level, for example, because the user has bad eye sight and needs big zoom. Acrobat or even the author of the document should respect this choice. It would be wonderful if PDF-XChange could offer an option to ignore the Zoom setting in the bookmark.

I hope an analogy will convince you that my request makes sense. Let's assume I use a digital camera. For a certain scene, I purposely I decide to use a different exposure settings than the automatic settings detected by the camera. But the camera decides that I am wrong and reverts all my manual settings to whatever it thinks better. In my opinion, the camera doesn't have the rights to make such decision, simply because it doesn't know what the user want to see.

Hopefully this kind of stupid camera doesn't exist, this is just a fictive example to illustrate the point. When absolute safety is not involved, I really don't see any reason for a machine to override a human decision.

Hi,

Version 3 will go some way to resolving this issue - you will be able to set default preferences - but this option cannot be made to function always - its part of the PDF specification.

For example, it cannot work if: a bookmark(s) contains action(s): FitPage, FitWidth, FitVisible, FitRect, or if bookmark(s) contain special JavaScript-actions which specifies new position and zoom.

It will work if a bookmark/link contains a simple go-action: NewPage/NewXY/NewZoom.

Hi, ZeroPaper.

This feature will be added into the new release.
Look to "Preferences/Page Display" in the new build.

Best
