Firfox Plugin not working
Is there a problem with the PDF Viewer plugin and Firefox 3.6? The plugin is installed and is selected in Options. I have read the FAQ on this forum and done as it suggested (Reset Plugin.disable.....)and it worked fine, until I reopened Firefox and I was back to square one.
But on checking in about:config this line is now missing. Can anyone give me any idea as to what can be done to get the plugin working?

Hi Kilgetty,
As I understand it Mozilla changed the way that plugins are handled in version 3.6. We are actively looking into this.
Sorry for the inconvienience.

Hi Paul,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I guess I will have to live with the problem until Firefox is sorted out.

Re: Firfox Plugin not working
It works for me. View your plugins i had to play around with it too when i updated to 3.6.
Make sure PDF viewer plug-in is enabled. It should be plugin for PDF-XChange.
Another thing i had to do was go to Applications in FF and change PDF format to open with PDF-XChange. It was opening with a different PDF view. So check all the applications to see which one it is currently opening with. Then change to Use PDF-XChange
see below example

Re: Firfox Plugin not working
Hi Stefan, I had rather inconclusive results, I went to one site and opened a manual within Firefox successfully, but the next site I tried I got a pop up asking if I wanted to open the document with PDF-XChange Viewer (default). Then just to muck things up the third site worked fine. So it seems to be a bit of hit and miss. I hope this information helps.

Hi, kilgetty
Please give us some this URLs with different behavior(FF opens PDF internally or externally) for investigating.
Thanks.

Re: Firfox Plugin not working
This is the url that will not open within Firefox.
http://www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/content ... 6&id=10286
Select "School Terms and Holidays 2010-11"
This is the url that opens OK within Firefox.
http://digico-computers.com/reference.htm
Select "Micro 16V System Manual"
I cannot give you the other url that worked correctly because it is inside a private password protected account.
Hope this helps.

Hi, kilgetty.
FF opens documents externally from:
http://www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/content ... 6&id=10286
because each url to document does not contains the "pdf" tag:Instead FF internally opens the: because this url contains "pdf" tag.
In these cases this is not our fault - it is the current behaviour of FF.
To the point - Adobe's Acrobat/Reader behaves the same way with the given examples.

Re: Firfox Plugin not working
Hi all,
I'm experiencing a fairly similar issue to that described in this thread - since upgrading to Firefox 3.6, pdf documents now open in Adobe Reader within Firefox instead of with the Pdf-xchange viewer plugin.
I've tried the Reset Plugin.disable.... FAQ suggestion, as well as checking that my Firefox application settings still have pdf documents set to open in pdf-xchange viewer (in Firefox), and checked that the 'display pdf browser option' is ticked within the pdf-xchange viewer preferences. No dice!
I have noticed that in about:plugins, pdf-xchange viewer is enabled - but no suffixes are listed (whereas the pdf suffix/extension is listed for the Adobe Acrobat plugin). Could this be the problem? If so, how do I change the about:plugin settings?

Re: Firfox Plugin not working
Hi mattnz,
it seems there is a bug in the way that FF 3.6 handles the plugin. We have reported this bug to Mozilla but so far there has been no action. Since Mozilla is open source we are somewhat at the mercy of the community for correcting this bug. There doesn't seem to be much interest in taking on this bug. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=542543 so anyone wanting to is more than welcome to add a vote on the bugzilla site.
In addition we are looking to see what if anything else we can to to make this work again.
Your patience in this is most appreciated.

Perhaps try to uninstall Adobe? Your computer probably is set adobe as the default PDF program

I deleted Adobe Reader and in Firefox 3.6 options Adobe Acrobat Document in actions I changed it to use PDF -X in Firefox.
PDF now opens in Firefox -no downloads.Adobe Reader is bloated crap anyway.

Re: Firfox Plugin not working
I have a problem on these lines too. In a search for an acrobat alternative, I was trying the foxit suite in FF3.6, but I decided that I liked PDF-XChange better. I am using PDF-XChange on other machines with FF3.6 without problems (love it!). I am pretty sure it's a conflict between plugins, since I still can see the foxit plugin in FF and despite the uninstall. When I have a look at about:plugins, I see the Foxit with the suffix pdf, while the pdf-XChange does not. Disabling the foxit plugin does not give the suffix to PDF-XChange, so it doesn't do anything, actually, not even a blank page. I am getting around so far by telling FF to open pdf files outside of FF (Options>Applications).
Any suggestions on how to get rid of the foxit plugin and restore the suffixe much appreciated!
******
Ok, problem solved. I reinstalled foxit, and uninstalled it again. This time I made sure that all foxit folders were gone (oh surprise, there was 1 left behind with the plugin inside...), and restarted the computer (btw, I run W7x64). At first, PDFX plugin didn't work either. When I clicked on a .pdf link, the main FF window got black, then back to white and no pdf displayed. Using the repair function of the installer didn't do the trick. So I uninstalled and reinstalled PDFX, with a restart in between (just to be sure). The about:plugins still don't show any suffix, so not a sign of a problem after all.
Conclusion: I'm done foolling around with pdf viewers! I don't know whose "fault" it is between foxit, FF, and PDFX (I'd say it's shared), but perhaps there's room for improvement in the management of the plugins, clean uninstall, etc...

Re: Firfox Plugin not working
Hi gsalze,
Actually suffixes in about:plugins page doesn't mean anything, so it should not bother you.
If you still get black screen when opening PDF in FF, please try to manually copy file "npPDFXCviewNPPlugin.dll" from "..\Tracker Software\PDF Viewer\Win32\" folder to "..\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\".
HTH.
