renaming PDF's

Post by frankrizzo »

I have a folder of hundreds of PDF's and I need to rename them but the only way is it open the PDF copy the name down, close the PDF and rename the file. I need a way to preview the PDF, so i don't have to open, close, and then rename hundreds and hundreds of PDF's. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks

Frank T Rizzo

I am Using Windows XP Pro

Okay i figured out how to view the files as thumbnails. The problem is the PDF are way to small in order to read them. Is there another way?

If you have installed the shell extension, you can preview the documents with a large thumbnail from the file open dialogue.

This thumbnail can be resized, and the file information pane can be reduced to nothing to make the thumbnail even bigger.

Files can be renamed without opening them, with the usual Windows Explorer methods — click to select and then click again (not double-click which opens them) to rename the file, or right-click and select "rename."

I don't see any solution other than opening the files. Then at least you can copy the order number to use in the file name. Close the file, then Alter Tab to switch to Explorer to rename the file.

Is there a way to search a file folder for a Name in the PDF? I.E. search a windows file filled with a bunch of PDF's for a name within the PDF File.

The shell extensions can make use of the iFilter in Windows Search. This means that you can use Windows Search tool to search for content inside the PDF files in a folder.

This would require the files to have text information of course - rather than just a scanned image or an image converted to PDF and absent of any text content.

One more possible solution:
1. Run Viewer, open File Open dialog and resize it and preview window to maximize preview.
2. Select file in dialog and shortly you will see it preview.
3. Press right mouse button and select rename from context menu.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 untill all files renamed as needed.
