Crash on Installing Auto-updater Update

Post by Bhikkhu Pesala »

When I check for updates I am told I need to install an update for the auto-updater.

However, when I try to install it, the installation program crashes. The dialogue says that installation finished successfully, but obviously it did not as the auto-updater upate did not install.

The PDF-XChange program itself updates successfully.

Using Windows XP Home SP3. I attach a crash report.

Yes, I experienced the same problem.
(OS Windows Vista Ultimate SP2)

First I tried to update the auto-updater only.
I planned to update the Viewer after updating the auto-updater, as that seemed the most rational thing to do.
But when trying to update the auto-updater, Windows said the program wasn't working.

So I tried updating both auto-updater and viewer together.
If I remember correctly, Windows said the auto-updater program wasn't working, again.
And my firewall kept on asking for permissions, about four times for the same application.

Nevertheless, after a while, both the updater and the viewer were updated correctly.
But it was quite a bumpy road to get there...!

I hope next updates will be smoother.

Hi,

Thanks for the report - we have located the problem and will update shortly - though it does appear despite the problems the update does work correctly - but leaves a process trying to update twice - apologies and a fix wil be available very shortly so the issue dont arise again.

Thanks for your patience.

This seems to be fixed now. Auto-updater installed without crashing. No more updates are available now.

The LiveUpdate update still needs some work.

Yes, as Bhikkhu Pesala says, it does not crash or hang with updating, now.
But on my system, OS Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 32 bit, after updating the LiveUpdate application, when I check for updates again, LiveUpdate comes up with the same update for LiveUpdate. When I run this update, and check again, LiveUpdate still comes up with the same update.

I ran update as Administrator, as usual (yes, even with right-click, "run as administrator"), I rebooted the system, but still the same result: when running LiveUpdate, it keeps on offering the same update.

Please check InstallPath value in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Tracker Software\LiveUpdate - does it contain correct path where you LiveUpdate.exe is located? Or maybe you have more than one copy of the LiveUpdate.exe utility ?

Hi Ivan,

The registry key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Tracker Software\LiveUpdate
The InstallPath is C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\Live Update
This is the correct path where LiveUpdate.exe is installed.

There's only one copy of LiveUpdate.exe in C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\Live Update
It's version is 2.0.42.1
Is that the latest version?

There were two more LiveUpdate.exe to be found, both 2.0.42.1
Those were in C:\Users\XXXXXX\AppData\Roaming\Tracker Software\LiveUpdate\Updates
I deteted those two.
After that, I ran LiveUpdate again. There was a 'new update'. I installed it.
I ran LiveUpdate again. There was a 'new update'. I installed it.
Nothing changes.
The copy of LiveUpdate.exe in C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\Live Update is still the same.

Thanks, Ivan.

I downloaded LiveUpdate.exe 2.0.51.0
This version works just fine.

After running that LiveUpdate.exe 2.0.51.0,
I deleted version 2.0.42.1 from C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\Live Update
and I copied LiveUpdate.exe 2.0.51.0 to that location.

To my surprise,
at the location C:\Program Files\Tracker Software, I found a file Live UpdateLiveUpdate.exe, file version 2.0.51.0
It's the same file as LiveUpdate.exe 2.0.51.0, but with the wrong filename and at the wrong location. Very odd.
I deleted that file.

I suppose this resolved the problem.

Hi John,

You say it was the old version that I deleted, and that you suspect it was renamed etc by the update process.

I deleted two files.
I deleted LiveUpdate.exe 2.0.42.1 from C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\Live Update
and I deleted Live UpdateLiveUpdate.exe 2.0.51.0 from C:\Program Files\Tracker Software.

I think there are two mysteries:

1. LiveUpdate.exe 2.0.42.1 in C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\Live Update wasn't updated as it should've been.

2. There was a file Live UpdateLiveUpdate.exe 2.0.51.0 at the location C:\Program Files\Tracker Software.
If I'm not mistaken, there shouldn't have been be a LiveUpdate file at that location,
it should've been at C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\Live Update.

Hi Spiff,

There was a long standing issue with the LiveUpdate 2.42... and we had to make significant changes on a progressive problem to work around various diferrent OS/Virus and firewall combo's until finally we got the whole process nailed down.

The first release of Build 2.051 had a minor config issue - our problem - and we resolved and corrected, hence the reason I suspect you see 2 versions of that - but now all should be ok.

Hope that helps

Thanks, John,

Yes, I have no doubts all is OK now.
I was glad it was so easy to download the right file via the url that Ivan provided and to put that file in the right directory.

The only reason why I provided all that information about the different files and locations was for the benefit of Tracker Software, in case it could be helpful in any way in the proces of perfecting the LiveUpdate proces.

Thanks again and best regards.
