Customise Toolbar + move sticky notes

Post by tick tack »

Hello,
as a former Foxit Reader user I thought I should give the PDF-Change Viewera try and so far I am quite pleased with it. It seems to be much faster than Foxit Reader and therefore I made it my default PDF-Reader. However, there are a few things I liked about Foxit Reader that aren't included in your software - it might be worth including them in your software as it would definitely increase the work flow:

1. Is it in any way possible to make a note (the yellow commenting boxes) move with the pdf file as you scroll thorugh it? Instead of having several notes I'd like to have a "master note" box so that i could "pin" it at the beginning of the document once I've taken all my notes - it would serve as a summary for the whole pdf content.
2. I don't like how the note boxes "behave" - have a look at the foxit reader note box: it's really easy to minimise/change the size of a note box and to scroll through the content of the note box itself as the noteboxes have their own SCROLL BARS. As far as I know this is not possible with the PDF-XChange Viewer. Instead note boxes always display the WHOLE text which is really annoying as it blocks the main texts (I know, you could always turn of the note box text if you would like to read the main text but still...it's really annoying - If you've ever worked with foxit's note boxes you don't want to miss this feature). In addition it is also frustrating that the note box "disappears" when you scroll down so far that the head of the note box is no longer displayed.
3. The Toolbars are great but I don't like the way they are "clustered". It's not very comfortable to split them up in quite big groups. For instance: I like the comment toolbar whereas I just don't need the stamp toolbar. However, I can't display the one without the other. Or did I miss something? The stamp tToolbar takes up way too much space for me. So my question is: is it possible to customise the toolbars - and I mean every single icon (e.g. display the highlight icon but not the cross out icon?)

As I wrote earlier: I like your software - it's fast and has many nice features - it's just that it could be so much better...

Thanks a lot for answering my questions.

1. Not possible at the moment
2. Scroll bars for notes are on the wish-list (for very large notes than can fill the window)
3. The interface is extremely customisable. Right-click to customise the toolbars, menus, and shortcuts. See my independent review for more details.

Hi tick tack

It's nice to see you here. Feedback is always appreciated.
Is it in any way possible to make a note (the yellow commenting boxes) move with the pdf file as you scroll thorugh it?
I'll need to pass this on to the dev team to see if this can be added as a feature.
noteboxes have their own SCROLL BARS. As far as I know this is not possible with the PDF-XChange Viewer.
Scrollbars will be included in version 3 of the Viewer due out after summer.
I like the comment Toolbar whereas I just don't need the stamp toolbar. However, I can't display the one without the other. Or did I miss something?
The Tool bars are highly customizable and you can simply remove items you don't want, like in this case the Stamps Tool, or create your own custom Tool Bars.
Right Click a blank portion of the Toolbar --> Customize --> Commands [tab] --> Tools [category] --> drag the Stamp Tool from the Toolbar to the "Commands" section of the window.

and you will have a Comments Toolbar without the Stamp Tool

There is a lot of power here to make the Tool bars exactly how you want them. Try it out, I think you'll agree that this is a great feature.

That was a fast reply and your explanations helped a lot. Thanks! I'm quite impressed by the PDF-XChange Viewer and I'll stick to it - and I am really looking forward to the new features. (Please let me know if :)
Nonetheless there are three more questions I have (have a look at this image: http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/7863/xchange.jpg (sorry, i don't really know how to include an image directly))

1. Why is it not possible to include the "Pages Navigation" toolbar at the top of the interface where all the other toolbars are as well?
2. Even if you remove all the tool bars from the bottom of the interface there remains an empty area that blocks the pdf text - why?
3. Is it in anyway possible to remove the "Download Creations PDF Tool" button? If not, is it possible to reduce its size in order to make it blend in smoothly with the rest of the tool bars? You can clearly see the "ugly" space that is produced by it beneath the toolbars. :(

Thanks.

Good question and one I'll have to put to the dev team. It may be possible that this can be done for v.3. No promises though...
2. Even if you remove all the tool bars from the bottom of the interface there remains an empty area that blocks the pdf text - why?
same answer as above
3. Is it in anyway possible to remove the "Download Creations PDF Tool" button?
You can't hide or resize it in the Free Viewer, however if you have a license you can hide it by checking the box "Hide AD bar" under Edit --> Preferences --> Registration

I'll see if one of the dev team can give feedback on items 1 and 2.

Thanks for your answer once more. Seems like version 3 is going to be a major update! :)
Oh, another thing I was wondering about: Working with tabs is great BUT if you are working with one single file there shouldn't be a tab open for it - it's simply not necessary and it takes up space (the name of the pdf file is displayed in the upper left corner anyway!). Once you've opened a second pdf file there should pop up the tab "browser". Again, this would result in a clearer working space. In my Opinion the best PDF viewer is the one you hardly see - it's all about the pdf text, isn't it?

Some people complain too much about nothing. Spend more time trying things out and less time suggesting how to change things. Find out what you can do rather than complaining about what you cannot do.

Turn off the navigation tabs and use Ctrl Tab to navigate open documents. Press and hold Ctrl Tab and see what happens.

Thanks a lot but cool down please. I did not complain at all. I made suggestions and asked questions. You are right when blaming me for not having read the manual very carefully but that does not mean to you have to become rude. I thought it would be easier to talk to other people about it - and as you can see there are a few things Paul could not answer + features that are not included in the software yet. Some people appreciate feedback of any kind - others feel annoyed by it. I prefer the first group. However, as you seem to be annoyed by my comments I won't post more of my thoughts.
Anyway, thanks once more for your help.

Hi, tick tack.
1. Why is it not possible to include the "Pages Navigation" toolbar at the top of the interface where all the other toolbars are as well?
It's possible, you may create custom global toolbar by:
1. Display the "Customize" Dialog (by right click in the any toolbar or main menu).
2. On the "Toolbars" tab press "New..." button. Specify the new toolbar name and press OK.
3. in the "Customize" Dialog, activate the "Commands" tab and select the "View" section.
4. By drag-n-drop add next items "Page:", "Next Page", "Previous Page" etc. from list of commands to your new toolbar.
5. Close the "Customize" dialog.
After this you will be able to move and dock your new toolbar on the top (or on the bottom/left/right).
2. Even if you remove all the tool bars from the bottom of the interface there remains an empty area that blocks the pdf text - why?
We cannot reproduce this issue. Please send us the screenshot of this. Thanks.

This feature (option) will be added in the new version(V3).

Best
