Can change background color of selected text and save perma?

Post by mattad »

Assume I have loaded a pdf doc. I switch to "Select text" mode and mark a couple of lines in the text.

This marking operation turns currently the background color into light blue (see sample snapshot:
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/8021/samplemarking.png

Can I:
1.) change this background color to light red (user preferable)
and
2.) save this changed, marked background permanently into pdf text?

This would help me to emphasis certain text permanentely WITHOUT having to insert some of these giant comments bubbles. Marking background of certain text with (light) red would be perfect.

Is this somehow possible?

Hello Matt,

I believe you need the Highlight tool.
It allows you to do exactly what you require - highlight the selected text permanently.

Hi Stefan,

this looks good.
But: Where can I change the default style (color, opacity)?

Currently it is ugly yellow

Hi mattad

when you select any tool in PDF-XChange Viewer, the "Properties Toolbar" appears with context sensitive options. Here you can change the properties of the currently selected Tool like the colour or opacity.

Ok thank you.

I prefer to have as less toolbars shown as possible. So I disabled most of them including the "Properties toolbar". Normally software has the same features and options settings available through a menu.
Is there a way to change the settings through menu?
If not: Could you include this in the net release?

Thank you

Hi Matt,

Well you can access and even create new styles using: "Main Menu -> Tools -> Comment and Markup Tools -> Highlight Text Tool"
But the properties toolbar is one of the few I think should always be "on" in your Viewer.
You can of course add a highlight and then right click on it and change it's properties but the toolbar is quite faster and more useful for me.

Kind Regards,
Stefan

Thank you.

However I experienced a strange behaviour when I use the highlight tool.

When I use it in some pdf docs then the ends are bowed outwards (this is somehow acceptable) but in other pdf docs they are bowed inwards (this looks odd).

Why is there a different behaviour on different pdfs?

Could it be made always outwards bowed?

HI mattad,

I believe they should always be bowed out. Can you send us a sample to examine please? Please be sure to zip the file so the forum doesn't strip it from your post.

sincerely

Hi mattad

thanks for the sample. It is most curious, I have multiple documents open and using the same highlighter get normal highlight on all documents but yours where it is reversed.

I'll need the dev team to investigate this. I've created a support request ticket (internal only) RT#400: highlight ends reversed and will be posting the results on this forum.

cheers

Ok, thank you.

But the best solution would be to have NO bows - and highlighted text background just as a rectangle stripe.

Is this really, really not possible ?

Could you ask the developers if they could make it feasible this way?

Thank you

Hi,

It is possible - we can create such appearance for highlight annotation. but then if you try to modify such an annotation using another PDF tool, they will create their own appearance which will be rounded...

When attaching files to any message - please ensure they are archived and posted as a .ZIP, .RAR or .7z format - or they will not be posted - thanks.

Yes please, create such an appearance.

I will most probably never modify such an annotation.
In almost all cases I need this only to emphasis some text statements.

And even if I would modify it later it would not become worse then now.

Is this possible in the next release of Xchange Viewer?

Hi Paul,

I would like to know how to change the background color BEHIND the document instead of the document itself?

I believe now its a standard setting kind of light gray or so, I would like to have dark gray or something darker (maybe somthing like adobe has in his free acrobat reader version since I am used to this a bit).

Thank you very much!

Hello Nzzo,

With the latest build of our Viewer (2.5.190) you can change that colour through "Edit -> Preferences -> Customize UI", and can even use a pattern instead of plain colour for the window background.

So please update to this build (if you haven't already) and check the UI settings.

Best,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

thank you so much for your quick and supportive reply.

I've downloaded the latest version and it was a matter of seconds to change. This is incredible great software, probably procratination is over... I believe I'll take a look for the pro version benefits :D

Thanks again!

Re: Can change background color of selected text and save pe

How disappointing to see so many people over the years with the exact same problem I am experiencing.
I've been using PDFXchange Viewer 2.5 Build 200 (Dec 14 2011 build)
In the past few weeks I have used it to fill out some forms and mark up documents using the text box and typewriter ... and changed fonts and colors.
Today (without changing anything or updating) - the text properties don't work, most of the options (font, size ... bold etc) are greyed out ... disabled. I've tried everything. What did something expire? A conflict?
Someone please suggest a solution ... I do indeed like this product but need to move on to something that works quickly if I can't get this fixed.
Thanks!

Please update to build 201 - this issue was resolved in that build.
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

I upgraded. Same problem. No change. Can't change font properties. Still greyed out.

Hello cjcornell,

Could you please provide us with a sample page that shows this problem - so that we can try it at our end and see what's wrong with those annotations (I suspect security restrictions on the file or flattened annotations).

Thanks! I just noticed that it works OK on some files and not on others ... weird since I should be able to use 'typewriter' on anything, right?
Weirder still is that, on a pdf that I had successfully annotated with text 2 months ago, had the same problem now...

The document that I recently was trying (where I cannot change the text/font properties) is actually merely a PDF 'form' to renew my dog's license ; ) it's not really a 'form' but just a plain one-page pdf. And it is publically available http://www.maricopa.gov/pets/pdf/tagreplace.pdf

the problem happens whether or not it is opened in IE or opened separately in PDF-Xhange viewer.

Thanks!

Hi cjcornell,

thanks for the link. That form actually is a fillable form. If you click one of the form fields you cannot change the font properties because that is dictated to you by the code of the form itself. If you select the Typewriter Tool and start typing outside any of the form fields you will be able to modify the text properties.

By default the Viewer will, when opening a form with fields, have an icon at the bottom right that will allow you to 'highlight' the form fields so you can easily distinguish those areas that have predefined font styles ans areas that do not.
