Split View Suggestion

Post by jeffp »

One of the most demanded abilities from my users is to move/copy pdf pages from one document to another, but in an easy way like via drag and drop.

I finally figured out a way to do this in the ViewerAX but it took a considerable amount of mouse clicks, and I don't think my users will readily figure it out.

To do what I want, here's what I did in the ViewerAX.

NOTE: I force Navigation Tabs on by default in our app.

1. Open two PDF files.
2. Turn the Navigation Tabs item Off (since Tile Horizonally won't be enabled if its On)
3. Turn on Thumbnails and make sure the pane is about 75% so as to see lots of thumbs
4. Select Tile Horizontally
5. I then can drag a thumb from one window and drop it on the other

My suggestion is to have a one button click answer to this issue.

One of the big issues here is having to force Navigation Tabs Off. The other big issue is that the current implementation will only work well if there is only two documents open, since Tile Horizontally will be unmanagable with more than 2 documents/Windows.

To me, the best way to do this is to create a new command and call it something like Split View or Move/Copy Thumbs. This command would then split the screen in half, with an upper view and a lower view which would be identical, turn on thumbnails and size the thumbnail pane to 75% or so. It would also force Navigation Tabs to TRUE, since this would allow all document tabs to span out on the top of each view and allow the user to work with more than two documents as he drags and drops thumbnails between the views.

Thoughts?

Great! But please make it easy two display and size the two document windows to be used in drag and drop. A one button click to set up the views/windows would be awesome.

Please make the top (or bottom) view, where the target document is assembled using drag and drop, to be able to rotate horizontally, like flipping a book back and forth (using a flick gesture). That will be awesome! I will be really anxiously waiting for V3 to release.
