Named destinations

Post by Chuck »

How do I view and create named destinations?

In Adobe Standard one can code a page as a "destination" (named destinations). This way a link can be made to that page specifically and one doesn't have to worry about page numbers. The destination sticks to the page no matter where it is moved in the file.

Hi Chuck,

I am not sure I understand what you are asking, can you please provide more detail on your inquiry.

Thanks,

Hello Chuck,

It's also possible to create Named Destinations with our Viewer as well.
Select the link tool and either create a new link or click to "edit" an existing one.
A "Link Properties" window will open. In it select to Add or Edit (depending on whether you created or are editing an existing link) the link and from the drop down select
Add "Go to a page in this document".

A new window will open named New/Edit Action "Go to a page in this document" where you can create a given View (with zoom level, portion of the page shown, which page to be shown etc.) and then set this view as a named destination that would be stored for this file.

Best,
Stefan

I'm with you up until the setting of the page as the named destination. It's grayed out and won't let me pick it. It doesn't seem to want to let me pick it no matter what.

Hi Chuck,

You need to click the radio button - it's either the upper settings, or the lower.
When you click "Use Named Destination" - the button to set the current View as such would become active.

I suppose I wasn't clear. I can't pick the radio button. It won't let me. What is the setting or procedure I need to take to have it allow me to pick that option (The radio button for "use named destination")?

Hello Chuck,

Hmm.. you should be able to.
Is the document security protected? If not please check that you are using the latest build of the Viewer (currently 2.0.57) as if you are using an older build this might be not working.

Hi Stefan,

No, the doc isn't protected. It shows version 2 (Build 44.0). At least under help - about. I can't do much about the version being it is a corporate thing. If you can confirm that it is a "build issue" I can try making some noise up the ladder.

Also, a replace page functionality would be much helpful to me too, as I have to rebuild links on a page if I delete it and add instead of replacing.

Thanks,
Chuck

Hi chuck,

even with the item grayed out can you see the "Add Current View" button as in this image?

Image

The features for named destinations were added incrementally from build 41 onward. If you have this button then you should be able to use named Destinations from both existing and new links and we'll have to dig a little deeper to see why this is failing. If the button is absent then you have confirmation that an upgrade is required.

Hth,

No, I don't have the same view you do. The "Add current view" you have circled and the "Delete" buttons are not in my version's window. Everything else seems to be the same. And I assume that the already created named destinations are supposed to show up in the field above these two buttons. The ones I already have in the file don't show up in that box. (But they do work for linking to.)

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

that's your queue to push for an update. You might want to wait a few days however as the release of V2.5 is due any day now and there will be a number of improvements that are relevant for a corporate environment, most significantly we have done a lot of work improving support for XFA forms.
