Won't open a PDF from Mozilla Thunderbird

Post by Milesch »

Have been using WinXP 32 bit, Thunderbird 3.1.7 and PDF Xchange Viewer 2.0 (build 54.0) without difficulty. If a PDF attachment is included in a msg simply click on the attachment and Xchange Viewer opens the PDF.

Installed PDF XV 2.5 (build 191) in Win7, 64 bit, again with TB 3.1.7. However here when I click on a PDF attachment a window is received such as: "C:\Users\Miles\AppData\Local\Temp\11 01 12 LT Client re Excess - file copy-6.pdf could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.''

There are no plugins in either TB and no relative attachments. Also preferences in both are identical. And I see no mention of a helper in either. Both have Options/Attachments, Content Type: Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Doc with Action Use PDF-Xchange Viewer. In fact both profiles are identical since the WinXP profile was just copied over to Win7 after install of TB. PDF XV was installed subsequently along with several other programs. FYI, the PDF email attachment can be downloaded to the computer and there it can be opened with PDF XV.

Wonder if this is a bug in the new version with Win7 or is there another setting?

Hello Milesch,

Can you try to manually set this in TBird and try to make it use our Viewer?
Open Tools -> Options -> Attachments and then select our Viewer from the list.
If it is not in that list - then browse to the folder where you installed the Viewer and select it manually (The "Use other..." option).

The other thing that comes to my mind is to open the Viewer (with TBird stopped) and go to Edit -> Preferences -> File associations, and click to "Restore File Associations", click apply, close the Viewer, then open it again go to the same place and click "Make default PDF Viewer", and then apply again - this should successfully reset the file associations for PDF Documents under windows, and TBird should from there on work as expected and launch the Viewer when you double click on a pdf attachment in an e-mail.

Best,
Stefan

Thanks for your suggestions which put me on the right track. What finally worked in TB was to go to attachments and highlight the Adobe 7 row which already contained use PDF Xchange Viewer and at the bottom was set to always ask me to save files. Above that is the line Save Files To which read the folder "downloads" etc. I selected that row and changed it to read the path on drive C to Tracker, etc. and it works fine. Then set the selection back to the row "always ask me." It doesn't always ask me for Xchange Viewer nor any of the other entries.

Don't know if anyone else can figure this out in TB, trial and error does the job!

Hello Miles,

Glad to hear you found a way to fix it.
Sometimes TBird can really behave a bit weird when you try to change something out of the way it has done it initially ;)

Cheers,
Stefan
