[suggestion] Quickly select pages based on aspect ratio

Post by Jensen Head »

I suggest considering the possibility of quickly (in two clicks) selecting all pages with landscape, portrait or square orientation in the Thumbnails panel.

Hello, Jensen Head

Could I ask for some more context or examples on what specific functions you would envision making use of after this selection method?
While there is not a quick select option like this, some of the tools I could see as most useful with this selection, do already offer a distinction between landscape/portrait orientation pages, but perhaps there are others you are thinking of?

This may be considered "too niche" to be worth the development time, unless we can find some more readily apparent uses for it, so I am trying to establish those uses before I bring it to the dev team.

Corrects skew only for portrait scans of single pages, but not for spread scans (where each page has its own skew).
Selects only spreads (landscape orientation) for cutting into individual pages.

Hello, Jensen Head

Thank you for that, I have raised this with the Dev team for consideration, and will let you know if this receives a favorable reply.

RT#7471: Select pages - by aspect ratio (portrait/landscape/square)
It is in the air whether this will be a case of adding a function to the "select pages" tool, or if we will be adding a new "page range" selection option to a bundle of dialogues, so we will have to wait and see what the devs come up with.

Real example:
PDFXEdit (2025-05-10 10-52-57).png

I don't know why such documents are produced. Perhaps it happens when documents are photographed, and the top-bottom orientation sensor, pointed vertically downwards, goes crazy, producing random values. In any case, without the ability to fully use Ctrl and Shift, the lack of DJVU support and the lack of the "automatic orientation detection and spread cutting" function, in general, to convert hundreds of archived DJVU documents into recoverable PDFs, you have to do the following:

1. Open DJVU in Abbyy FineReader PDF OCR Editor.
2. File / Save As / Page Images (FineReader does not support cutting pages exactly 50%) / PNG or TIFF (because when using lossy formats, correcting distortions reduces the image quality, which in DJVU already leaves much to be desired).
3. Create a new document in PDF-XChange Editor from the images exported in the previous step.
4. Move focus to the Thumbnails panel, press Ctrl + A and, holding Ctrl, click on the thumbnail of each page of the spread with landscape orientation (or holding Ctrl, click on the thumbnail of each page of the spread with portrait orientation).
5. Click Rotate pages CW/CCW 90°.
6. Ctrl + A (possibly excluding the first and last pages).
7. Split pages by 50%.
8. Click OCR Page(s).
9. Wait for the document to be OCRed.
10. Save as PDF.
11. (repeat all steps for each document)

Instead, you could do the following:
1. Open the DJVU document in PDF-XChange Editor.
2. Click "Select all pages with portrait orientation" (possibly excluding the first and last pages).
3. Click Rotate pages CW/CCW 90°.
4. Cut pages by 50%.
5. Save as PDF
6. (repeat for all documents, excluding points 2-4 for those that do not need it)
7. Send all PDF documents for recognition in PDF-Tools.
8. Wait until all documents are OCRed.

In the second method, the user does not have to additionally purchase Abbyy FineReader PDF and the recognition periods are combined, allowing you to do other things during this time.

Hello, Jensen Head

If you are specifically looking to rotate your pages, that particular dialogue already offers the option you need:
image.png
Simply click rotate pages on the organize tab, and then choose all portrait pages, and rotate them 90 degrees to get a uniform document.
