Editor crashes on opening a PDF
Windows 7, SP2, 32-bit. Latest version of Editor.
Opening from file or from history crashes Editor - even a new blank page does.
I've run a repair with no effect.
Exporting settings gives a 0-Byte file.
Any idea as to the cause, please?

Re: Editor crashes on opening a PDF
Might be a problem - I don't seem to have Visual Studio and the oldest version mentioned is 2015. Not sure if Win. 7 is too old for this.

Hello, Giraffe
You do not need to have Visual Studio specifically installed, redistributable files are intended to expand compatibility in a more "compact" way. If you follow the link Dimitar provided, the exe files offered here should work with win 7: The article only mentions that XP and prior are incompatible, so far as I am reading. Do you see an error when trying to the corresponding EXE for your system architecture in Windows 7?
Kind regards,

Re: Editor crashes on opening a PDF
Thanks to you both!
I decided to try the bl**ding obvious: ran VC_redist.x86.exe, it installed, rebooted and now I can open PDFs again.
Saving Settings still gives a 0-Byte file.

Hello, Giraffe
May I ask for a screenshot of the Export Settings window?

Hello, Giraffe
A member of our Dev team (Sasha) is asking if we could perform a Remote session with you to investigate this situation. If you would be amenable to that, please email Support@PDF-XChange.com with "ATTN: Dan & Sasha" in the subject line, and a link to this forum post, so we can arrange a good time for all involved.

Hello, Norfdas1
Did you try the method Dimitar sent above? Every single report of a crash we have seen since 10.7 has been fixed by following those steps:
This is caused by an improperly installed (or missing) copy of the latest VCRedist from microsoft. Please download and install the VC Redistributable pack from Microsoft's site: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/w ... w=msvc-170

ISTR that I turned off everything that could allow Remote or Sharing; also, after decades of being careful to exclude others in any form I would be very uncomfortable with this.Daniel - PDF-XChange wrote: ↑Mon Aug 25, 2025 7:56 pm Hello, Giraffe

Thanks for the offer but I don't save the settings very often.
With LibreOffice I just copy the folder '4' and I have the settings. Is there a file with the settings (.ini?)that I could copy?
Thank you for the offer.

Hello, Giraffe
The majority of application settings are stored in the registry, but if you wish to manually export that, you can do so.
This key, and all subkeys:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Tracker Software\PDFXEditor
Note that as with normal settings exports, this will not include license keys, nor will it include a handful of the secondary export options, like Stamps and signatures. Stamps and signatures are both stored externally.
Kind regards,

Re: Editor crashes on opening a PDF
Greetings!
I had the same problem: PDFXchage opened, but it crashes when I tried to open any PDF file or create a new PDF file.
However, it resolved by following the steps below!
Thank you very much, Dimitar!!!
I really like PDFXChange; it's wonderful! The support is also fantastic! These are the reasons I replaced other text editors and adopted PDF as my default text format. I no longer use .doc.

Re: Editor crashes on opening a PDF
Greetings!
I encounter the same problem on a computer from a colleague after upgrading from Windows 10 to 11. Visual C++ Redistributable is installed, version 14.44.35211 in x86 and x64.
Downgrading to older version (10.4.x) works for one day. But it is upgrading automatically to 10.7.1.399, even if I disable the update function.

Re: Editor crashes on opening a PDF
Hello, Roman78
We have taken down builds 10.7 and 10.7.1, and our updater does not operate without user intervention, unless you have explicitly configured it to do so. If you intentionally disabled it, there is no way that our software is performing that update process for you. Most likely, you are Either;
- Operating in a virtualized/managed environment, where you may lack the permissions to install the vcredist properly, or the installation may be getting reset to what is on the server.
- Or~ you have security software in place, such as Norton, which has cached the 10.7.1 update, and is pushing it out despite the known issues with it.
10.7.2 should be coming out in the next few days, and will include the actual installers for the required VCr libraries, which should prevent this issue for numerous users who are experiencing it.
Regardless of the above, assuming that you can get the VCr running 14.44.35211, and the DLL is still present on the device after a system restart, the software should be working in the latest version. If you are still experiencing crashes, please follow the steps here to record an application crash dump: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowledgeba ... estigation
Once that file is created, you can upload it here for us to investigate and identify the issues: https://files.pdf-xchange.com/s/9ZER7jazmbTyQki
