Inconsistent Tooltip Visibility and Positioning Compared to Standard Windows UI Behavior

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

I would like to report an issue I noticed regarding the timing and positioning of tooltips in PDF‑XChange Editor.

  • Animation.gif
  • sample.pdf
In the first half of the video, I demonstrate how bookmark tooltips appear in strange positions in the Bookmarks pane by following the steps below:

  1. Resize the PDF‑XChange Editor window so that its width is narrower than the screen, and place it near the right edge of the screen. In other words, make sure part of the desktop background is visible on the left side of the window.
  2. Open a sample PDF file.
  3. Open the Bookmarks pane and disable the “Wrap Long Bookmarks” option under Options → View Options.
  4. Move the horizontal scrollbar of the Bookmarks pane all the way to the right.
  5. Hover the mouse over the row corresponding to the first bookmark item, which is now outside the visible area due to Step 4.
In the second half of the video, I demonstrate how page‑number tooltips in the Named Destinations pane also appear in strange positions, following these steps:

  1. Open the Named Destinations pane and widen both the Name and Page columns until a horizontal scrollbar appears. At that time, adjust the horizontal scroll var position so that the left edge of the Page column is just barely visible.
  2. Hover the mouse over the rows corresponding to each Named Destination entry in the Page column, which are now outside the visible area due to Step 1.
For now, I have shown examples in the Bookmarks pane and the Named Destinations pane, but the same behavior can be observed throughout the application.

It appears that tooltips in typical Windows applications are displayed according to the following principles:

  1. Tooltips are shown only when part of the text is visible.
  2. Tooltips are shown at an appropriate position.
However, PDF‑XChange Editor currently behaves as follows:

  1. Tooltips are shown even when the text is completely hidden.
  2. Tooltips appear at incorrect or unexpected positions.
Regarding point A, there may be various possible implementations, so the current behavior in PDF‑XChange Editor might not be entirely unreasonable. However, point B clearly needs improvement, and I am reporting this issue for your reference.

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you for your hard work on this great software.

Best regards,
rakunavi
