AI Assistant plugin and exported settings

Post by BrooksNYC »

Hi, gang. How's everybody? Well, I hope.

I know that the AI Assistant respects privacy, and does nothing unless engaged by the user. Am also aware that it's possible to remove (hide) the AI Assistant from the main toolbar.

Still, I decided to send the AI Assistant packing. To that end, I uninstalled PDF-XChange Editor, then did a CUSTOM reinstallation from an offline installer, during which I UN-ticked the AI plugin.

Once reinstallation was complete, I exported my settings.

QUESTION: Do my exported settings include my decision not to install the AI plugin?

A hyphothetical:

Suppose I were to uninstall and reinstall the software again—but this time choose a standard installation (NOT custom). The AI plugin would be installed by default.

If I then imported my previously exported settings, would those imported settings zap the plugin? Or would I need to run another custom installation in order to be plugin-free?

Put another way, how much clout do those imported settings have when it comes to keeping, or losing, the AI Assistant plugin?

Kind thanks for your help. :)

Hello, BrooksNYC

No, your settings do not reflect the installation choice. That is an action which dictates whether or not the files are physically present on your device - settings cannot impact that (it will neither "add" nor "remove" the plugin files when you import a settings file).

When you "update" the software, the updater process does retain your previous custom install settings, so the AI plugin should not be installed by direct updates, but any manual reinstallations will require you to choose a custom install.

Hi, BrooksNYC

the settings will not change what is installed. If you do a complete reinstall the AI will return. A more robust approach is a Group Policy. Group Policies do not need to be only on a domain, Windows includes a "Local Group Policy Editor" where you can set a "Plugins Policy" that does not include the AI.

That WILL be "remembered" between installations:

The latest Template is always here: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/Tracker_AD_AdministrativeTemplates.zip Look to the Editor template and the Plugins category:

Enable it and add thew string: AIAssistant:0

For this or any plugin you can yourself retrieve the command string to use from the listed plugins:

After the policy applies the AI Assistant is not available even if it was originally included in the install.

I hope that helps.
