pdf won't view in browser

Post by Frankz »

Win7 64, Firefox 12.0, PDF-XCV 2.5.201

pdfxcv is the default, and only, pdf viewer.

Preferences / File Assoc, Display in Browser is checked.
I've checked it and restarted, unchecked it and restarted, and back again, no luck.

Hi Frankz,

Sometimes when the Viewer is updated, the plugin dll for firefox gets blocked.

Please close Firefox and copy the file npPDFXCviewNPPlugin.dll,

found in the folder C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Viewer (or the folder that you installed the viewer into)

And paste into the folder: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins

Run Firefox and let me know if you can view PDF's in the browser now.

Hope that helps

Best,

Chris

I notice that file was already in that location, but it was only 167k and the one I copied was 213k.
I copied the new one over anyway, but it still didn't work.

If I then uncheck the "display in browser" option in PDFXV, it deletes that file. Rechecking it adds back one that is 167k, but it still doesn't work.

The only changes I think I've made since installing PDFXV many months ago and it working, was to update from Firefox v10 to v11 and then to v12. Unknown if it stopped in response to one of those updates.

Uninstalling PDFXV now, then reinstalling, see if that works.

edit:
no, reinstall didn't work.

Hi Frankz,

there are a couple of other things you can try if you are comfortable using the command line.
look in the FF settngs to see what is set currently for the mime type application/pdf:

Image

Choose "Use PDF-XChange Viewer (default)

You can also try forcing the association with Admin privileges in case this is a permissions issue. In an administrative prompt use:

makes full association:

Code: Select all

PDFXCview.exe /makeassoc:web=true

Let us know how that goes.
Best regards

213k - this is the size of the 64-bit version of npPDFXCviewNPPlugin.dll
167k - this is the size of the 32-bit version of npPDFXCviewNPPlugin.dll
So, for 32-bit firefox it should be the npPDFXCviewNPPlugin.dll 32-bit version.
Maybe you have blocked our plugin inf FF.. ?
Check please FF/Options/Application (as Paul suggested) and look to FF-plugins list by entering special address in FF - about:plugins...

was to update from Firefox v10 to v11 and then to v12.
And maybe you have installed two FF in two different locations... ;)

No, it's just the builtin FF update, no reinstall required, so no chance of multiple installs.

Thanks for that Frankz,

you seem to have a number of PDF associated actions there that seem a little strange. Specifically the one you want is with the mime type (application/pdf). Boewerses use a minme type for associating applications for file types not the file extension that your OS will use.

2 thoughts here:

1. Clean up your Firefox installation removing some of those extraneous entries and set the mime-type application/pdf to "Use PDF-XChange Viewer (in Firefox)" :
Image
Using "Use PDF-XChange Viewer (default)" will launch the stand alone Viewer.

2. Re-install Firefox using a new Profile. I'm not sure if simply re-installing Firefox will help as it is likely to keep these settings. You'd need to check the Firefox support for that.

(Firefox has now updated to v13.)

Somehow I got it to finally work.
I closed FF, uninstalled pdfxcv, deleted the file mimeTypes.rdf in the FF profile directory (it creates a new file next time it's launched, resetting all associations).
I then reinstall pdfxcv, set it to display in browser.
It now shows 1 single pdf association in FF. I check pdfxcv options, to make sure Browser is checked.
But it still didn't work.
I finally open Control Panel / Default Programs / File Assoc., and it shows .pdf as pdfxcv. Just the for the heck of it, I change it to Firefox.
It works.
