PDF looks not right in Xchange Editor

Post by SOL_Chris »

Hi, I work in IT support for a large German company, and two of our end users have the following problem:

A few PDF files are displayed incorrectly in the PDF-Xchange editor for both users. The line spacing is incorrect, and also the fonts. Every first letter is in CAPITAL.

The behavior/display is exactly the same in Adobe Reader DC.
It only displays correctly in EDGE and Firefox.

It's definitely not the PDF document itself, as other users can view the same document correctly, regardless of which application they use!

We've tried the following to narrow it down:
  • Having another user log in to the affected user's PC, who has never logged in to this PC, and having them open the PDF - same behavior.
  • Deleted/rebuilt the Windows font cache - no change in behavior.
The image shows on the right the view is the correct view, and on the left, the view in the PDF-Xchange editor (incorrect).

Thanks for your help!

There was a similar problem a few weeks ago:
viewtopic.php?p=192908&hilit=font+problem#p192908

Unfortunately, there was no follow-up anymore from the users' side.

Can you please post at least one page of the concerning PDF here on this forum ?

Most probably the specific fonts that are generating problems, are different and/or damaged on the concerning PC's.

Kind regards.

Same problem here. Same PDF file shows differently on Edge vs. PDF-Xchange.

Hello, EricM

A very important item to note here is that MS Edge is not a fully featured PDF software, it does have its own slew of errors, and it does not fully understand the Specification. This means that if it and other "partial solutions" to PDF handling are the only software wherein you see an issue, it is very likely the problem is on their end, not ours. (See below about "sporadic" issues)

Do you see the same issue in other full-fledged PDF software, such as Adobe, or Foxit? If their appearance is identical to ours, and all of them are consistent (the issue is NOT exclusive to certain devices), than it is much more likely an error with the document data itself. Often the font data embedded into the file could be damaged causing issues like this. Many partial solutions cannot use all types of embedded fonts, and will choose to substitute a locally available font, giving a more "standard" appearance. Most full featured editors will choose to the the embedded font, if it exists.
  • If the issue is only present in the partial handlers like PDF apps but not in dedicated PDF applications, I am afraid that it is unlikely we will be able to "fix" this issue, beyond flagging it as a type of content error, and presenting a banner when opening such files (That also assumes it is an error which is detectable. Some issues are obscure enough that such "detection" isn't often reliably possible, cross-referencing a font that isn't available locally, would be one of them..)
If the issue is sporadic, and like OP in this thread, it looks proper in our software on some users devices, but appears incorrectly on others, it will be very important to know that particular facet of the issue for our investigation, as well as see a copy of the file, as requested below. In that case, I will also want to know about any differences between our software on those two devices. Perhaps one of them is running an older build? Maybe one device has the proper version of the used font installed?

In any case, the more samples we have the better. Can I ask you to please email us with the same as we requested before:
  • Specifically, It would be best to have a copy of the PDF document, screenshots of how it looks on your end, in both our software, and a software where you believe it looks "correct".
If the file contains sensitive data, please email those files to Support@PDF-Xchange.com and include a link to this forum post, so we can take a look.
